Chinese Steam Card Scam

I am the victim of a steam card scam. I bought a card at wal mart to sell for bitcoin. I found a buyer and after having tried a couple others, this one accepted the trade right away. I uploaded the card with the code scratched off and followed the directions to a tee. Everything was done with as much careful scrutiny as possible.
Next, as soon as the trade started, he said he needed a few minutes and disappeared. When he came back, he started spamming in the chat copy pasted messages calling me a thief and that I had used the code already (I clearly did not, I bought several cards at once and only scratched one off).
I talked back and forth with him, and made it clear that I would not be cancelling the trade as he had already redeemed my code and did not release the funds. It is impossible that anyone else could have used the code.
I asked him to show his steam account history, and he sent me two different screenshots. One of a small balance, and another of an account history with the account name conveniently cut off. When I pointed this out and said that I felt it was a scam, he immediately disputed the trade, knowing that a moderator would not arrive for some time.
As I attempted to upload my evidence (my receipt and the card that he stole the code from, with his insane chat in the background) he began to spam the chat hundreds of times with the same copy paste message, saying my family is shameful and that I would die for stealing from him. He copy pasted about a dozen messages and sent them hundreds of times, trying to flood the chat so the moderator couldn't read it while simultaneously keeping the chat open and the dispute live.
He has negative feedback, and it's his only real feedback. I realize now that all the positive feedback was for 5 dollar purchases, and was likely done by bots to build the accounts feedback rating up.
His account name is "SaucyTrevally465" and it is a Chinese account pretending to be American. He has threatened me hundreds of times in the dispute chat, which no moderator has arrived in and it has been about an hour, and he continues to copy paste messages in an attempt to make the chat unreadable for the moderator when they do arrive.
Here is a link to his profile: https://paxful.com/useSaucyTrevally465
In the dispute we are in currently in paxful, I have already uploaded my receipt and images of the physical card which I used in the trade. I also included his psychotic ranting in the background.

u/Martha_Paxful can you please help? I don't know what to do! The dispute is open and he is losing his mind in the chat calling me names and freaking out. I just want my money back, he has it in escrow right now and I know I'll never get the code back but that's okay. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: I think this whole thing is run by bots, after seeing the way the scammer replies in chat, it has become clear that they aren't run by a person and simply a bot designed to use automated trades and then paste in canned responses until they escalate and eventually start a dispute! They even paste screenshots in the chat, but they're all identical! This is actually a bot, I'm relatively sure! If anyone wants me to pastebin the chat log I can.

The importance of being mindful of security at all times - nearly everyone is one breach away from total disaster

This is a long one - TL;DR at the end!

If you haven't heard yet: BlankMediaGames, makers of Town of Salem, have been breached which resulted in almost 8 million accounts being leaked. For most people, the first reaction is "lol so what it's just a game, why should I really care?" and that is the wrong way to look at it. I'd like to explain why everyone should always care whenever they are part of a breach. I'd also like to talk about some ways game developers - whether they work solo or on a team - can take easy steps to help protect themselves and their customers/players.
First I'd like to state that there is no practical way to achieve 100% solid security to guarantee you'll never be breached or part of a breach. The goal here will be to get as close as possible, or comfortable, so that you can rest easy knowing you can deal with problems when they occur (not if, when).

Why You Should Care About Breaches

The sad reality is most people re-use the same password everywhere. Your email account, your bank account, your steam account, your reddit account, random forums and game websites - you get the idea. If you haven't pieced it together yet the implication is that if anyone gets your one password you use everywhere, it's game over for you - they now own all of your accounts (whether or not they know it yet). Keep in mind that your email account is basically the holy grail of passwords to have. Most websites handle password changes/resets through your email; thus anyone who can login to your email account can get access to pretty much any of your accounts anywhere. Game over, you lose.

But wait, why would anyone want to use my password? I'm nobody!

It doesn't matter, the bad guys sell this information to other bad guys. Bots are used to make as much use of these passwords as possible. If they can get into your bank they might try money transfers. If they get into your Amazon account they might spin up $80,000 worth of servers to mine Bitcoin (or whatever coin is popular at the time). They don't care who you are; it's all automated.
By the way, according to this post (which looks believable enough to be real) this is pretty much how they got into the BMG servers initially. They checked for usernames/emails of admins on the BMG website(s) in previous breach dumps (of which there are many) and found at least one that used the same password on other sites - for their admin account!
If you want to see how many of your accounts are already breached check out Have I Been Pwned - I recommend registering all of your email addresses as well so you get notified of future breaches. This is how I found out about the Town of Salem breach, myself.

How You Can Protect Yourself

Before I go into all the steps you can (and should) take to protect yourself I should note that security is in a constant tug of war with convenience. What this means is that the more security measures you apply the more inconvenienced you become for many tasks. It's up to you to decide how much is too much either way.
First of all I strongly recommend registering your email(s) on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ - this is especially important if your email address is associated to important things like AWS, Steam developer account, bank accounts, social media, etc. You want to know ASAP when an account of yours is compromised so you can take steps to prevent or undo damage. Note that the bad guys have a head start on this!

You probably need to have better password hygiene. If you don't already, you need to make sure every account you have uses a different, unique, secure password. You should change these passwords at least once a year. Depending on how many accounts you have and how good your memory is, this is your first big security vs convenience trade-off battle. That's easily solved, though, by using a password manager. You can find a list of password managers on Wikipedia here or you can search around for some comparison articles.
Some notable choices to consider:
Regardless of which one you choose, any of them is 100x better than not using one at all.

Multi-Factor Authentication / Two-Factor Authentication (aka MFA / 2FA)

The problem with all these passwords is that someone can still use them if they are found in a breach. Your passwords are only as strong as the website you use them on. In the case of the BMG breach mentioned above - all passwords were stored in an ancient format which has been insecure for years. It's likely that every single password in the breach can be reversed/cracked, or already have been. The next step you need to take is to make it harder for someone else to login with your password. This is done using Multi-Factor Authentication (or Two-Factor Authentication).
Unfortunately not every website/service supports MFA/2FA, but you should still use it on every single one that does support it. You can check which sites support MFA/2FA here or dig around in account options on any particular site. You should setup MFA/2FA on your email account ASAP! If it's not supported, you need to switch to a provider that does support it. This is more important than your bank account! All of the big email providers support it: GMail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, etc.
The type of MFA/2FA you use depends on what is supported by each site/service, but there is a common approach that is compatible on many of them. Most of them involve phone apps because a phone is the most common and convenient "thing you have" that bad guys (or anyone, really) can't access easily. Time-based One-time Password or TOTP is probably the most commonly used method because it's easy to implement and can be used with many different apps. Google Authenticator was the first popular one, but it has some limitations which continue the security vs convenience battle - namely that getting a new phone is a super huge chore (no backup/restore option - you have to disable and setup each site all over again). Many alternatives support cloud backup which is really convenient, though obviously less secure by some measure.
Notable choices to consider:
Some sites/services use their own app, like Blizzard (battle.net) and Steam, and don't allow you to use other ones. You will probably have a few apps on your phone when all your accounts are setup, but it's worth it. You'll definitely want to enable it on your password manager as well if you chose a cloud-based one.
Don't forget to save backup codes in an actual secure location! If you lose your backup codes and your auth app/physical key you will be locked out of accounts. It's really not fun recovering in that situation. Most recommendations are to print them and put in a fireproof safe, but using some other secure encrypted storage is fine.
There is such a thing as bad MFA/2FA! However, anything is at least better than nothing. A lot of places still use SMS (text messaging) or e-mail for their MFA/2FA implementation. The e-mail one has the most obvious flaw: If someone gets into your email account they have defeated that security measure. The SMS flaws are less obvious and much less likely to affect you, but still a risk: SMS is trivial to intercept (capture data over the air (literally), clone your SIM card data, and some other methods). Still, if you're not a person of interest already, it's still better than nothing.

What Does This Have To Do With GameDev?

Yeah, I do know which subreddit I'm posting in! Here's the section that gets more into things specific to game development (or software development in general).

Secure Your Code

Securing your code actually has multiple meanings here: Securing access to your code, and ensuring your code itself is secure against exploitation. Let's start with access since that's the easier topic to cover!
If you're not already using some form of Source Control Management (SCM) you really need to get on board! I'm not going to go in depth on that as it's a whole other topic to itself, but I'll assume you are using Git or Mercurial (hg) already and hosting it on one of these sites (or a similar one):
First, ensure that you have locked down who can access this code already. If you are using private repositories you need to make sure that the only people who have access are the people who need access (i.e. yourself and your team). Second, everyone should have strong passwords and MFA/2FA enabled on their accounts. If 1 person on the team does not follow good security practices it puts your whole project at risk! So make sure everyone on the team is following along. You can also look into tools to do some auditing and even automate it so that if anyone's account becomes less secure over time (say they turned off MFA one day) they would automatically lose their access.
Additionally you should never commit secrets (passwords, API keys, tokens, social security numbers, etc) to your code repository. Probably 90% of cases where people have their AWS/Google Cloud/Azure accounts compromised and racking up huge bills for bitcoin mining is due to having their passwords/keys stored in their git repo. They either accidentally made it public or someone got access to the private repo through a compromised account. Never store sensitive information in your code repository!
Next topic: Securing your code from vulnerabilities. This one is harder to talk about for game dev as most engines/frameworks are not as susceptible (for lack of a better word) to these situations as others. In a nutshell, you need to keep track of the following:
A lot of these things cannot be solved automatically, unfortunately, but some of it can. If you are using Javascript for your game you likely will be using packages from npm - luckily they (recently) added security auditing for packages. For other languages you can look at tools like Snyk or some other alternatives to audit the libraries you use in your project. Unfortunately none that I know of are aimed at game dev in particular, but it's still important to use these tools when you can. In general, be aware of all of your code dependencies and what impact they can have on your game or your customers if there are security bugs. Impact can range from "can cheat in multiplayer" to "can get IP addresses of all players in the world" or even "can get all information I ever put on my server", etc.
In general you'll want to look into Secure Software Development Lifecycle (commonly SDLC) practices. Microsoft has some information on how they do it.

Secure Your Computer

I'm not going to go in depth on this one because at this point everyone should have a handle on this; if not there are limitless articles, blogs, and videos about the how/what/why. In summary: Keep everything updated, and don't open suspicious links.

Secure Your Website

I will have to add more to this later probably, but again there are tons of good articles, blogs, and videos on these topics. Hopefully the information in this section is enough to get you on the right track - if not feel free to ask for more info. Lots of guides can be found on Digital Ocean's site and they are relevant even if you don't use DO for your servers.
A lot of this will apply to your game servers as well - really any kind of server you expect to setup.

That's it, for now

I ran out of steam while typing this all up after a couple hours, but I may revisit it later to add more info. Feel free to ask any questions about any of these topics and I'll do my best to answer them all.

TL;DR (y u words so much??)

... in general... in general... in general... I sure wrote those 2 words a lot.

Why Should I Trust This Post?

Hopefully I have provided enough information and good links in this post that you can trust the contents to be accurate (or mostly accurate). There is certainly enough information to do some searches on your own to find out how right or wrong I might be about these things.
If you want my appeal to authority answer: I've been working at a major (network/computer) security company for almost 7 years as a software developer, and I've had to put up with pretty much every inconvenience brought on by security. I've also witnessed the aftermath of nearly every type of security failure covered in this post, via customers and the industry at large. None of the links I used are related to my employer or its products.
Edit: Fixed some typos and added some more links
More edit: added a few more points and links

My Personal Digital Extremes Experience

My Personal Digital Extremes Experience
Hi Tennos.
First off I would like to state this is a throw away account. Don't want to log into my Primary Reddit account solely since I moderate on a sub-reddit

I am here to just share my story of my experience with DE. I hope, new players can see what this company is before playing the game. I understand my post will obtain a lot of dislikes by those that support DE, and the post may even be deleted by the moderators. I have read the posting rules, and this is not a petition. This is simply me getting my story out about DE. There will be no TL;DR, sorry. Not something I can really shorten, but will try to keep it as short as possible while retaining what I need to say.

I first started off this game back in... I want to say 2012/2013. I bought the Grand Master Founders pack. Enjoyed the game a lot, in fact, loved the game. Eventually, because of Yahoo and their terrible support, when Yahoo got a major leak a lot of us lost access to our Yahoo accounts. Said Yahoo email was unrecoverable according to Yahoo Support. I contacted DE support. In hopes they would change my email for me since that was the only game with significant value compared to my other games (I lost Runescape, Adventure Quest... blah idc). After a couple back and forth messages along with me showing proof of account ownership as well as what little evidence I had purchase wise (most was on my email), they basically said no. We can't help you.

That was the first time I have ever quit a game and felt completely rejected by support. Didn't seem worth it to make another account after losing so much progress as well as a $250 founders package. So quit a game I loved playing.

Eventually, met a person on steam that wanted me to play again. He has more than 2,000 hours in the game. He got bored of playing the game despite enjoying it a lot. Mostly was bored since not much to do now, and none of his friends would play without wanting something. So yeah sure, told him my story, but he said it changed. Lots of new changes. That, truth be told, got me excited. I loved that game initially, and the content when he explained it to me just sounded absolutely amazing.

Started playing with him. He gave me a quick boost to 30, as well as an absolutely amazing warframe called Equinox (to help make up for all the progress I lost, obviously wasn't the same, but made me really happy). Gotta say, Equinox is my favorite. I like how he looks. I like his play style. I like everything about him. So was progressing relatively fast since I am good at these games. I think I managed to get to MR6. Not bad... just started playing again, and only been a week. Well, I started having a need for platinum. First, my friend gave me platinum and a prime as a thank you for playing with him. He was incredibly happy to have someone to play with, and I was incredibly happy to play again. I used that platinum for basic needs like inventory, and improving my Equinox. Bought some mods I needed. However, I needed more. I purchased platinum. Didn't really want to, but to enjoy the game and advance I needed to. Only purchased $15 using my Steam Wallet from funds I obtained from selling Steam Cards. Not a lot, but it sure does help! Then after that ran out, I REALLY needed plat again. Maxed all my weapons and frames. Starting to run out of nodes. So started using the 2 online markets. The basic one and the riven one. Anyways, started actively trading.

I eventually met another player in one of my frequent Discord servers via the voice chat. He just popped in when I was in it. We started talking about warframe. Told him some about my past with it, what I am currently doing in it, and so on. He offers a trade with me. Some platinum, for some items. Sure? Why not. I need it. Make the trade, and he gave a large amount of plat. Enough to get me up in MR so I can start experiencing more of the game. Maybe... 2 days later? I try logging in and it says I am banned. Okay, must be a mistake since I didn't do anything wrong so I tried logging in again. Basically the message said Negative platinum. I did some research on it and it's from people with compromised accounts fraudulently obtaining or selling platinum.

I was shocked. When I cheat in games, it's single players I have beaten numerous times. I have no need to purchase boosting services in anything since I used to be a pro gamer (Diamond in Siege, Challenger LoL, Grand Master SC2, Top 2v2 and 3v3 in WoW Arena... etc.) I played a lot and got good. I never need to purchase currency since when I do it's solely from the company selling it. Why would I not support the game I enjoy? I was mostly shocked though since I am an injured vet. Absolutely no bank at the moment, PayPal Credit is in debt (which banned me from using it) and I don't have any means of income other than a VA check I use solely for survival. Why would I sacrifice eating, medical treatment, and living in a place for mere virtual currency that doesn't benefit me in the slightest?

So I contacted support. Provided the following: Emails (obviously I would need a payment confirmation or something from the person I bought it from), PayPal debt and ban proof, bank account closed proof, and my steam purchase of their currency to save them the time of asking as well as my market history of over 6,000 transactions (all selling) as well as 152 active ones. Also offered other ways of proof if they needed it such as a written statement from my old bank stating it was closed, would even tape myself walking in and asking.

Got my first response 6 or 7 days later. Out of what little respect I have left for DE I have left my name as well as theirs out of any pictures.

When I play a game. ANY game. Actually, not even just games. The simple use of a website. I immediately read all rules, ToS/ToU, EULA and anything else they have to offer. Quite simply put, I personally did not break the rules. The player that traded with me did however. This message over all however made me mad and quite defensive. I have not, will not cheated in this game. I enjoy it to much to be that stupid. Basically put, if some of you have trouble reading it, these are the key points:
  • Known black market platinum re seller.
  • Any gifts received will also be removed in the same manner.
  • Purchasing in-game items with cash.
  • Reverse by paying them money.
  • Avoid unbalanced trades or free trades.
  • Participating in black market activity.
This, is ridiculous. After showing sheer amount of proof that I absolutely can not buy anything (at the time I only got $200 a month to use on survival by the VA... legit 3-5 times less than minimum wage), they still think I am selling. It's as if he completely ignored all my evidence I gathered up, just like when I lost my previous account to hackers.
A few points of my own though:
  1. If he was a known black market platinum seller why on Earth do you wait so long to do your job and ban them?
  2. Why must everything my friend gave me be removed as well?
  3. How do new players know whats unbalanced and not?
  4. How do you avoid black market activity, when you're not seeking it out?
With all of that in the first message, despite reading every single ToS they had available, they're treating me as a pro player with thousands of hours with the knowledge of the exact price of every item in the game. I am new. This information is not easy to obtain, especially in a chat dedicated to bowsette and pineapple on pizza. So here's my personal logic and understanding on those 4 points from the first message:
1) I speculate, it's solely for them to make more money. They are a small company. I checked the platinum prices for each region that plays the game and by far the most popular, and price efficient is Russia. The prices are incredibly cheap, especially if you want to sell it. Which I am assuming, this along with the fact numerous reports on the forums that majority of the sellers are in fact Russian, means that it costs (according to enhanced steam on Chrome/Firefox) 1659 Russian currency. That, does not sound like a lot. It, to be honest, isn't. If a Russian has 100 USD, he can buy 4 packs that are worth $99 USD each. Simply by converting US currency (For reference: 1659 руб = 25.09 USD or 37.25 CAD). If I wanted to buy platinum for cheaper in a way that goes past the ToS of course, I would simply send support a message "Hey support, I'll be here for work. Will be there for a couple months. Will be playing your game while I am there, and may purchase something. Just wanted to let you know.", install a VPN and use a connection consistent with my story, use it for a couple weeks maybe even months, send another message to support saying you're returning and bam. Done.
Now why on earth, would I go through the trouble of looking for a seller. If I could do all of that in a manner of minutes?
Doesn't make sense. So my point is, if they can't even ban a person that's not only known as a black market seller, then why shouldn't I make the jump to saying they're clearly profiting off the black market purchases? All they need to do is let the guy keep buying and selling. And when someone enjoys the plat for a day or two simply ban that person, tell them they need to pay to get out of the negative. Usually ends up being $100-$400. And profit. That adds up to be honest, so am I really that far off in my speculation?
2) Why must everything I received from a friend be removed to? He's on my steam friends list. On my in-game friends list. We've planned numerous games all day together, but even he is a threat? Really? If you remove everything he gave me, I would literally be just Excalibur, the 2 starting weapons, no mods, and no levels. Not a point in playing now is there?
3) How do we know? Really. Any community representative or moderator in the game, absolutely does not recognize or care about anyone other than their friends or people they actively talk to, bs to, or play with. So they're out of the question. Only about >1% is actively helping players, but it's so hard to see their responses from the sheer amount of childish chats going on in the chat. If I can't ask anyone, there's no list available, and I am brand new. Then how the heck am I supposed to know if it's unbalanced or not?
4) I traded with someone, using DE's own trading system, using their own items, to obtain their own stuff. Nothing I did, was part of black market activity other than accepting a trade from a player that requested specific items verbally to me.

Of course however, I got really mad at that point. They're trying to force me to pay money if I want to have access to a count I did nothing illegal with. I sent my response in anger, and requested someone above him to talk to. My request was beyond ignored.

Got my second response 2 days after the first:
This probably aggravated me the most. This message, made me re-read the first message he sent and I noticed something I probably should have before I sent my response: Extortion.
1) He claims here my screenshots provide no evidence despite what he said earlier. Earlier he said, I illegally obtained currency by purchasing it from a third party re-seller. Now, please tell me how my bank, PayPal, email log, and steam market transactions are completely unrelated? They are ALL RELATED TO MONEY. That's the bottom line. He basically disregarded my evidence I have given him. As I was talking to my dad about this, he mentioned; "well you could just go get a gift card or something from the store" and I said, "First off, with what money? I get $200 a month for injuries, no job, and I am mostly freeloading off of you until I recover. Second, to use most of the debit gift cards I need to use it through PayPal, which of course is banned. Also, most websites after checking to see how to purchase currencies, only take PayPal, Bitcoin, or a legit card that can only go through a Russian bank which I cant do, because gift cards don't work internationally like that. They don't like it."
2) If he took the matters seriously, he wouldn't have completely threw out all my evidence I provided (about 7-9 screenshots over all), as well as do a simple task even an 11 year old can do: view a log. Viewing a trade log is not investigating. An investigation relies more on just having the Kick bot be like, "Bro, this trade looks funny." An investigation, is taking all sides into consideration, not throwing out anything that goes against their original claim. When I was 13, I was running a community of over 100,00 people, being a pro gamer, and working on scripting for a wow private server. I'm smart. Not an idiot. I know how companies investigations work, and I know how to investigate a game. But when someone comes to you with a bunch of proof you didn't do something, why the heck would you toss it out unless you know you're at fault?
3) This is where, in my current response I said I will literally go to UPS and United States Postal Service and get you any documentation you want. I will get you entire lists of everything I have ever sent and received. So now, not only did I offer to get proof from my bank that I literally can't purchase anything, but now I am offering to invade my personal life simply to give them the irrefutable proof they need. I also requested the general location of the guy who had the compromised account. Not the exact IP, just the region. So they can't go back and say, well... it says it right here... or you're still hiding something.
4) If anyone has used Discord, you know what I mean when I say voice chat proof is non-existent. It is literally impossible as far as I know. I'm sorry. I will not ever record every single thing I do and take screenshots every five seconds. Honestly, maybe I should since companies don't understand how anything works other than how much money they can make. For those that don't know, when you join a chat (at least on my main servers) it does not say when someone does and it does not keep a log of it (at least on my servers I joined). You may also change your name, nickname, and profile picture at any time. As well as the last four of your identification number if you have nitro hence when you see Discord#0001 or something along those lines. So proof of this? If he knew anything of Discord it's impossible. Especially since I would have had to not only take a screenshot at that exact time, but some how magically found a way to record his voice through my headset.
I will NEVER keep my profanity in check. I am military. I talk the same way to my superiors, and them the same way to me. It's how I am in my life. I find it highly disrespectful someone who does not know me asking me to change something about myself, how I have been my entire life, because it "bothers him". I don't care what bothers him on a personal level. I really don't. It's not his job to bring his feelings into the matter, it's his job to be support and he should act that way. In his personal time, by all means act like whatever you want. The fact is that he has a job and is a doing a poor job of it.
So overall, my experience with them over the years is... terrible. Especially now, where they are literally trying to extort money out of me to have access to a free game. It would make sense if I was at fault. To be honest, completely and utterly honest, I am not. I have provided as much proof as I can that I don't have money to spend on a game other than what I already have on steam. I have played the game fairly and followed their rules to the letter. The consistently get called on their shit on posts, and peoples issues tend to go unsolved. Of course, not everyone is innocent, but the few of us that are get screwed. Seriously though. I showed how they're asking for money to some people. I have read it over and over and over again to make sure. The company is clearly trying to extort money out of me. Obviously, I can't do anything about it. Take them to court, and their expensive lawyers would win or at least keep it at a stand still for years. So my last resort was letting everyone know my experience. Point out their extortion, and hope at least some members of the community read this before it gets deleted. If you agree with my review about the game please up-vote or down-vote it. It's an honest review about all aspects of the game. If the link doesn't work, you can view the name in it, look up my profile, and find the reviews on my page.

Take care tennos.

[ALERT] Scammers /u/vapebacon, /u/fapegiifs

Repeat scammers: fapegiifs (alt of fapegifs), JamesFranco4 (Steam GC scammer)
Beware, scammers make new accounts all the time. Even if they are not banned now, that does not mean it is safe to trade.
Before you trade with someone, they must comment on your post. If they do not, it means they're banned. We have 10+ people per week being scammed by repeat scammers who are already banned. It's unfortunate this post has to be made, even more unfortunate is that most of the people who are going to continue to get scammed will not even read it. The only reason these scammers continue to do this is because people are continuing to willingly hand away their money.
Do NOT pay with Bitcoin, G2A payment, Amazon gift card, Steam gift card, Paypal Friends and Family! These are (obviously) scams.
Do NOT trade with anyone on the Universal Scammer List! I would think this wouldn't need to be said, but apparently people are gullible enough to trade with people who claim they were falsely banned.
Do NOT trade with anyone who has not commented on your thread! This means they are banned. To add onto this, the USL bot has had some issues lately. This means users that have been banned for scamming may not yet be on the list. ALWAYS have someone comment on your thread.
Do NOT trade with someone who has not provided valid timestamps for the item you are purchasing!
Always report fishy traders or attempted scammers who are not already banned to modmail.
Yes I completely ripped off dweller_12's previous post. It covers the bases well :-)

[PSA] A guide to known scams and how to avoid them

First of all - my condolences to the guy who eventually traded his Karambit Marble Fade Fire & Ice for basically nothing.
This guide describes all kinds of scams I've came across during the 10 months I've been trading. I haven't got scammed so far and I hope you won't as well.
Feel free to correct me if I got something wrong, or to add some missing information. Also if you can provide screenshots as IRL examples of those scams, I will be very grateful.
Let's start from the easiest and most common ones.
1) Phishing and SPAM links
Those are really common. In most cases they lead to a virus, or shitloads of adds.
Protip: Just don't click on any links which lead to a unknows site, disable for people outside of your friends to comment on your profile and ignore friend invites from private profiles or profiles with low ranks.
2) CSGL/OPskins/Steam Wallet cards empty trade offers
Very common. A scammer trying to look as a official bot of some know sites or steam itself will send you an empty trade offer saying it's for a bet, or than you will get some steam wallet funds, etc.
Protip: Just flat out decline these. Accept the empty trade offers only if you're absolutely sure that it's for a bet you've just made, etc.
3) Item swap scam
One of the oldest scams. There are two examples:
Protip: Just be careful and pay attention to the trade. Also having the Steam Inventory Helper installed helps quite a lot since it tells you the ammount of keys and the total value of the trade
4) DOTA 2 items/Rare cards scam
Also very old and quite easy to avoid scam. How does it work? Well, some Dota 2 items can be signed by a player ant that makes them uniqe. You can then sell them on the steam market and since they're one of it's kind, you can ask pretty much for any price you can. Same with some rare cards/backgrounds, etc. So the scammer puts them on the market for a ridiculous price (most of them are actually worth below 1 USD) and sends you an offer which at the first sight looks like an overpay. Well it isn't
The other way to scam is that the scammer, who for exaple sells some knife, will tell you that he will only trade the knife for the particular item. If you purchase the item from the market, he will get the money and then refuse to trade with you.
Protip: Know the real prices and don't fall for "too good to be true" overpays.
5) Fake overpay item scam
If you ever got a comment on your CSGL trade like this: "Hey, I can overpay. Check my trade and send me a steam offer (ONLY STEAM OFFER!)" you know what I am talking about. These scammers have various trades on CSGL, offering a decent overpay most of the time. However there's a catch - the item they're trading isn't actually the one they have in theirs inventories. Or to be more precise - they're not in the same condition.
This is very common with the skins where the condition makes a huge difference in price (for example M4A4 Radiation Hazard FN vs MW and others) or with some Stattrak Skins (Battle-scarred vs Factory New).
Protip: Again. Be careful and pay attention to the condition of the skins. Having the Steam Inventory Helper helps a lot here since it will tell you the price of the skin.
6) "Dopplers and Case Hardened" scam
This is propably the latest and most sophisticated type of scam. I call it this way because most of the time the scammer use Doppler and Case Hardened knives since their price vastly varies depending on the pattern (Ruby, Sapphire, Blue gems).
The scammer will post a comment on your trade saying he has a blue gem or Sapphire/Ruby/Black pearl knife which is a decent overpay to your item. They also post a legit screenshot and link to their profile saying that the trade URL is in their steam profile. If you check the inventory of the scammer, the knife if really there, along with some few junk skins, mostly cases. However the supposed trade link leads to a different profile (also owned by the scammer) which looks the same (same name, same games, same items) but the knife itself usually has no special pattern at all.
Protip: Always inspect the knife befor you send any offer
7) Teamspeak/other voice chat scam
Some scammers will ask you to join their TS server (or even download some other voice chat app) to discuss a trade. Don't do that! Most of the time the I.P. leads to a "scam" server which will ask you to download some software, or in some cases it will even do it automatically (depending on the version of TS you have). The software is obviously a virus and can lead to losing all your skins, so beware.
Protip: Dont download anything from strangers and don't join to any Voicechat app servers with people you don't know. You can easily discuss the trade via steam chat.
Now some scams connected to real-money transactions
1) The "middleman" scam
Notoriously known scam. The scammer will ask you if you could use a middleman to hold your item which you're selling to the scammer, until he sends you the money. Most of the time the scammer will ask you if you have some real life friend in your steam friendlist who you trust. He will ask you to send him his profile and then he will make a duplicate profile with the same name, avatar etc. Then he will try to persuade you to trade your item to the "middleman".
Protip: Only use a trusted middleman from reddit or steamrep, or better - don't use a middleman at all. Basically 99% of people asking for middlemen are scammers.
2) The fake Paypal email scam
The scammer will agree to go first and send you his money for your item. He will ask you for your Paypal email (which is logical, if he wants to send you the money) but he will also ask you for your full real name - and thats the sign. You will then recieve an email which is supposed to look like an official email from Paypal saying that the scammer has sent you the money. But if your check your actual Paypal account, there will be nothing there.
Protip: Always check your Paypal account and balance before trading anything.
3) The Paypal invoice scam
In this case, the scammer will also agree to go first and he will offer you a good price on the top. However instead of sending you the actual money he will just fill in an invoice of the agreed ammount and send the invoice to you. You cannot get any money this way!
Protip: Always check your Paypal account and balance before trading anything.
4) Refunding the Paypal payment scam
If the scammer pays you money via Paypal and before sending them chooses the "I'm paying for goods or services" option, instead of the "friends and family" one (where you pay lower fees), he can that issue a refund and get his money back, leaving you without your skins and without your money. Edit: This can be apparently used also if the scammer used the "friends and family" option, so beware.
Protip: If using Paypal, only trade with reputable and well known traders (wath out for fake lookalike profiles) and remeber that Paypal is not the only way to get money for your CS skin. There's also Skrill, Bitcoins and of course OPskins. Anyway, try to no go first in real money transactions unless there's no other option (which there always is). And always demand a screenshot from the transaction plus take screenshots of the chat and the trade itself, to have some evidence that you actually both agreed on the trade.

[Controversial] Why I think crypto currencies (including BCH) will fail

In 2017 I learned about bitcoin. From my experience, it was mainly used by gamers and black markets. I'm a gamer but at first I didn't really want to use it because it seemed pretty complicated and extremely volatile. However, some people only accepted bitcoin because it's impossible to refund and paypal refunds are a HUGE issue. The majority of web shops already require id verification if you want to pay with paypal or credit cards, so bitcoin was a viable solution to a massive problem of people (semi) professionally scamming shops. You probably know the many forums where people talk about how to refund for a living.
I was overwhelmed by the demand for bitcoin recently and started to think probably we are all going to pay only in bitcoin soon. However, it turned out that using bitcoin was made almost impossible and even Steam discontinued bitcoin. It was discouraging to see people just speculating and trading and not using it. I switched mainly to ETH, BCH and XMR but I feel these currencies are barely accepted anywhere.
I know that BCH is aiming to improve merchant adoption. However, from my experience the gaming scene has completely switched back to paypal. I’ve never found people selling or buying things for BCH/ETH/XMR. It just doesn’t have any adoption, so “hodling” these coins is extremely speculative at the moment, as we cannot know which one will get adoption. At the same time, people treat every so called “shitcoin” like it could evolve to the next bitcoin very soon, causing a massive speculative bubble. It didn't pop yet, not even close, cryptos are still massively overvalued. The adoption and usage driven value of bitcoin might be at 1$ per BTC or 10$ per BTC or optimistically maybe at even at 100$ per BTC bot for sure not at 10k$. That's 99% driven by people thinking they could become millionaires by speculating.
I can’t imagine a system that contains houndreds of different crypto currencies which are used and adopted. Some people claim, it will be possible for all to survive as merchants could just adopt all of them and instantly exchange them, especially with systems that link different blockchains, make atomic swaps possible as well as upcoming decentralized exchanges. It still doesn’t make any sense for me. If you could just use every “shitcoin” because it can be exchanged to another coin or fiat, the amount of currencies would grow exponentially, causing more inflation than printing fiat money. While you already had a risk holding bitcoin, you now have to hold so many different coins that the risk to reward ratio gets very disadvantageous even for speculators.
How many people do you think are actually interested in using crypto currencies? I think average customers have no advantage in using them as they have much better buyer protection with paypal and also zero volatility (in fact not zero and dollar or euro could also crash but that’s unlikely right now and if you believed it long term you’d just hodl real gold and silver and not digital gold and silver which can be created by everyone by copying the source code). Only merchants could have a serious advantage by accepting crypto currencies as they are non-refundable but if there is zero customer demand it doesn’t make sense for them.
tl:dr: Adoption is dying out and loads of shitcoins are causing more inflation than central bankers could even imagine. Customers don’t have an advantage by using crypto, merchants have but won’t use it if there’s no customer demand. Unlike gold/silver it's also not a viable hedge against fiat currencies.
(I apologize for my bad english - it's not my mother tongue so please bear with me)
